Happy May Day!! Today is the real workers’ day celebrated around the world as May Day!!
Today let us honor our martyrs like Dr. King, Cesar Chavez, Walter Reuther, and every worker who’s ever fought for a better life and a better world.
Let us celebrate victories won by Labor with our allies, such as:
- the eight hour day
- bargaining on an equal basis with employers
- sick pay
- vacations
- Social Security
- Healthcare
- vacations
- health and safety regulations
- overtime pay
- pensions and retirement
- the Civil Rights Act of 1964
- the Voting Rights Act of 1965
- Family Medical Leave Act
- EEOC
- lgbtq rights
The conscious, intentional dismantling of American democracy and the consequent inequality and its twins, poverty and the destruction of the working class are the two biggest crises that have faced America since Nazism, fascism, and Japanese Imperialism.
Today, on this International Labor Day, let us all individually and collectively struggle for, indeed, fight for what we in the South called The Beloved Community and an economy controlled by workers for workers and future generations, the power of workers to control their destiny and the future.
If we don’t weaken the future belongs to us.
- Let us recommit to not grow weary in well-doing.
- Let us recommit to make work more noble and life less mean.
- Let us leave this world better than when we got here.
